“Can you please leave me alone?”

Artist Statement

In our day-to-day lives we are constantly enduring immense pressure, continuous social interaction and an overabundance of stimuli invading our senses every second. People need safe personal space to feel protected, reduce stress, and remain focused. For many of us, it is easy to overlook the tremendous impact that emotional, digital or physical space can have on our wellbeing. ‘Can you please leave me alone?’ is a photographic project exploring the relationship between personal space and mental stability. My images make comparisons between different interiors that we may find ourselves in. One warm, ornate and welcoming, the other, cold and clinical. We are forced to examine how we might feel in these environments. Where would we rather be in times of stress? How do our surroundings affect our productivity? Is balance important to a stable mind?
